Sometimes the outcome of an entire encounter hangs in the balance of a single moment—the crucial leap across a chasm to make good your escape, the attack that needs to drop the big boss before its turn, the effort to protect the healer long enough to get a fallen ally back into in the fight. And sometimes, when success is needed most, the dice betray you.

But what if you had one last line of dramatic opportunity? What if you could double down? Double Down provides optional rules for characters to pay a cost for a chance to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, without making the risk of failure just an illusion. Doubling down discusses how such rules work, the price paid for both success and disaster, and why failure is often less fun than the threat of failure.
