Born from necessity and German engineering ingenuity, the HE-111-Z was created by fusing two obsolete airplanes together and adding a fifth engine. Originally designed as a tow plane for gliders, it was pressed into frontline service as an improvised heavy bomber when pilots and engineers realized its tremendous payload capacity and endurance. Symbolic of Germany's innovative wartime engineering, the HE-111-Z has been ubiquitous over the skies of Europe since 1945.
The Twin-Fuselage Terror
What makes the HE-111-Z truly dangerous is its embarked "parasite" fighter — a small jet-powered aircraft mounted on the bomber's back. The jet can launch, intercept enemy fighters, and return to its mount, providing a fuel-efficient high-speed escort with the same range as the HE-111-Z itself. The bomber is also one of the only aircraft in the Luftwaffe capable of hauling a fully loaded Giant glider into the sky.
