Cultures from around the world have described the awe-inducing horrors of the headless. From the Dullahan to the Blemmyes, these creatures share a reputation for cruel violence and ruthless tenacity. They are theorized to manifest when an especially gruesome death causes damage beyond one’s physical body, severing the link between memory and soul. This dark apotheosis often cements the most vivid memories of one’s former life as those surrounding the circumstances leading up to one’s decapitation. Some headless manage to break free of becoming mere instruments of anger and revenge, using this focus to find a more meaningful purpose to their unlife.
